AUTHORS: Solomon wrote most of the book. Agur and Lemuel's writings are in the final sections. Solomon, the third king of Israel, son of the great King David, reigned during Israel's golden age. When God told him that he would grant him whatever he wanted, he asked for an understanding heart (1 Kings 3: 5-14). God was pleased with this request and gave him not only wisdom, but also great wealth, power, and an era of peace. Solomon built the glorious temple in Jerusalem (1 Kings 6) and wrote most of the book of Proverbs.

The theme of wisdom and its need in our lives finds its fulfillment in Christ. Colossians 2: 3 In Christ, it is "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." In Proverbs we are continually exhorted to seek wisdom, acquire wisdom, and understand wisdom. Proverbs also tells us - and repeats it - that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (1: 7; 9:10). Wisdom is what is on the center stage - a great and divine wisdom, which transcends the total of history, peoples and cultures. Even a cursory reading of this magnificent treasure reveals the substantial words of wise King Solomon that are as relevant now as they were some three thousand years ago. When we read proverbs, let us remember that knowing God is the key to gaining wisdom. Let's listen to the thoughts and lessons of the wisest man in the world and apply those truths to our lives.
